ABOUT NPS

About NPS

Dutch public broadcaster NPS is a legally based, independent and discerning broadcasting organisation. Without any ties to political, social or religious movements the NPS has an open mind to all developments and opinions in society.

The NPS wants to use all possible mediaplatforms to enrich the public with programmes in the field of:

   ● Art & Culture
   ● Current Affairs
   ● History
   ● Children
   ● Diversity

The Dutch public broadcasting system is unique in the world. Over 15 different broadcasting organisations provide programmes for three TV channels and six radio stations. Most of these organisations have their origins in political, social, or religious movements. Some of them have been around for over 75 years. Until this day, they depend for their existence on their support group, consisting of members and subscribers to their own TV guides.

Dutch public broadcaster NPS is one of the larger public broadcasting organisations in the Netherlands. Its reason for existence, however, sets it apart.

NPS started broadcasting in 1995, following the Dutch government’s decision to transfer a large number of programme activities of the NOS (Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation) to a new broadcasting company. These activities are related to the areas Art, Culture, Current Affairs, History, Children and Diversity. The NPS presents itself as an independent and discerning broadcasting company with an open mind to all developments and opinions in society.

Programmes offered by the NPS prove that the company does not consider its legal requirements to be restricting. It fullfils its tasks in a broad and creative manner. All forms of art and culture are represented, from classical music to jazz, from opera to literature, from drama to ballet. This is done in all imaginable ways: documentaries, live recordings, talkshows, stand-up comedy, drama, etc.

Together with other Dutch broadcasters the NPS is involved in the making of authoritative news programmes and current affairs documentaries. Part of its programme package consists of exceptional documentaries and foreign films and series. NPS’ children’s programmes include Sesame Street.

The NPS strives to incorporate every aspect of the multicultural society in all its programme genres. Its cultural value to Dutch society is not limited to broadcasting stage arts on radio and television. The NPS also plays an important role as an initiator, programme compiler and co-producer behind the scenes of concerts, festivals, and opera and dance performances in The Netherlands. This results in programmes and websites that are appreciated by the viewers as well as by the public opinion. This appreciation is evident in the many awards that the NPS has won at film and television festivals all over the world, including Oscars for Best Foreign Film, Emmy Awards and Prix Italia Awards for various radio and TV programmes.
